restrict your kind response to shows from "roughly" 1978 and onward when the "drums" and then "drums>space" SEGMENT became a part of nearly every second set.

i find that it is often a lackluster part of the show. there was a smaller pool of tunes they seemed to have set aside for this sort of, THIRD ACT, of the show: The Post Drums/Encore Segment. and it became a bit formulaic -- conclusion of jamming, leading into a combo of ballad>rocker, or if you were lucky, rocker>ballad>rocker..... of course, there was a generous amount of variety and the occasional RISK TAKEN. but it can seem predictable.

SO, there are many, many GREAT POST DRUMS played by the dead, please cite YOUR #1 PICK for "Best Post Drums".....

i don't have a favorite, but this amazing ROCKED OUT JAM from, The Stabler Arena, September 25, 1981 is really SUPER & FIRST RATE!

Drums ->
d3t01 - Space ->
d3t02 - The Wheel ->
d3t03 - Sugar Magnolia ->
d3t04 - Black Peter ->
d3t05 - Around And Around ->
d3t06 - Sunshine Daydream

brent really makes the Wheel better, excellent vocals.... and bobby shreds on Sugar Mag, after the well done black peter and a quick Around, the drop back into Sugar Magnolia sets the crowd on fire.

As far as finding an "unusual" post-drums....perhaps 8/19/80 would qualify with an entire Playing in the Band>Comes a Time>Playing post-drums.....mighty fine Comes a Time too:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd80-08-19.naks.munder.8739.sbeok.shnf

9/2/78 is probably the shortest: only one song post-drums!

And 10/12/84 post-drums is notable for ending with Morning Dew, they held the rocker til the encore.

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: PLEASE SUBMIT: Best Post "Drums" (ACT III)... (Jerry HAS NOT left the building yet)

hey LIA!

only a couple of us wanna play, so i'm goin' again:

how about this show from Indianapolis, The Market Square Arena February 3, 1979 ?

THE OTHER ONE was definitely the boys favorite, POST DRUMS jamming vehicle -- and it was something to hope for in a show. though it would often quickly disintegrate into Ballad Time -- it offered lots of OPEN TERRITORY JAMMING possibility.... this night in 1979 doesn't range out too far, but it is a VERY CLEAN version with menacing leads from JERRY and spot-on, THUNDERING work from the rhythm section -- they tease it nice out of space with some very subtle, implied syncopation between phil and the drummers....

they settle into a most excellent WHARF RAT (jerry sounds great, second to last of the Godchaux Era) and then an Absolutely Rousing MIRACLE from bobby -- flipped to the bottom of the set here -- it had previously appeared this year almost exclusively as Bob's SECOND SET OPENER....

and then -- what pushes THIS POST DRUMS into ALL TIME STATUS -- miracle of miracles! -- just when you thought it was over -- JERRY gives us a SWELL -- "CASEY JONES"...... IT WAS EXTREMELY RARE, for Jerry to play the last song .... maybe that is another post?

Drums >
The Other One >
Wharf Rat >
I Need A Miracle >
Casey Jones

Just a few off the top of the head.There are a few more, but I can't think of them at the moment.Stuck in a '72-'74 rut right now--not a bad place to be.

Listened to this one yesterday, very good setlist, especially post drums/space. Immediately when I heard the first chords of Iko, I was thinking the same damned thing! How sometimes the post drums/space seg. would kinda drag and 'come down' a little much - not here!

SET 1:
-----
d1t01 - Feel Like A Stranger
d1t02 - Friend Of The Devil
d1t03 - New Minglewood Blues
d1t04 - Tennessee Jed
d1t05 - Cassidy
d1t06 - It Must Have Been The Roses
d1t07 - Technical Difficulties
d1t08 - On The Road Again ->
d1t09 - Beat It On Down The Line
d1t10 - Stagger Lee
d1t11 - I Need A Miracle ->
d1t12 - Bertha

SET 2:
-----
d2t01 - China Cat Sunflower ->
d2t02 - I Know You Rider
d2t03 - Lost Sailor ->
d2t04 - Saint Of Circumstance ->
d2t05 - Eyes Of The World ->
d2t06 - Drums ->
d3t01 - Space ->
d3t02 - Iko Iko ->
d3t03 - Truckin' ->
d3t04 - Stella Blue ->
d3t05 - Sugar Magnolia
d3t06 - (Encores) It's All Over Now, Baby Blue ->

OH YEAHHHHHH!

what a great one! the SPACE IS MOST EXCELLENT -- this is one of their best SCARY Spaces..... and it is very cohesive -- it's only 82 so jerry doesn't have too many effects to play with yet and still has to.... PLAY..... MUSIC!!!!

he switches to a very clean and slippery filter at about 5:13 of SPACE and some realllllllly nice playing between him and the WHOLE band takes place -- they go from scary to beautiful and back again..... jerry falls into a very long pattern and keeps playing it over and over..... eventually he decides on iko -- WHICH IS A WINNER.....

too bad however, he never really takes much interest in Truckin' and at the soonest possible moment leaves it in the dust and heads straight into STELLA -- for a well-played and sung version....... sugar mags is jammed and includes a long enough SUNSHINE DAYDREAM pause before they go round again -- really sweet....

i like all over now a little better, but all over baby blue..... jerry's best dyaln tune.

++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

glad to see more people are tagging on, some pick 84, 86, 87 -- not my usual years -- but i want to hear all these picks....

hands down 9-18-87. I think the rest of the show is a bit overrated but post drums is breakneck and amazing.

The MSG show was the first one that came to mind. Lucky enough to be there and for the absolute nadir year of the Dead in '85 at Richmond:

Drums-> Saint Of Circumstance-> Gimme Some Lovin'-> She Belongs To Me-> Gloria

May not move you listening to show, but for us that were there, it was great. And the main reason I think was the welcome break from the predictable post drums finish which would generally be along the lines of Jerry ballad, Bob Rocker, Chuck Berry/Buddy Holly salute, Dylan encore (if not the execrable Day Job at that point).

That was the second show i thought of! Just the placement of the drums>space in the middle of LS>Saint set it up to be unique. Not sure I would have puked on SDH's over it...

had he been wearing the new GD licensed Converse, I would have probably refrained from such behavior... (unless they were the Dancing Bear ones).

Truckin' ->
The Other One ->
Morning Dew ->
Sugar Magnolia

Encore
It's All Over Now, Baby Blue
[This is just dang hard to top. Great, great 'Dew' and the Baby Blue encore is just more icing on the cake. A wonderful "last kiss goodnight" version of this song. Makes me miss the Garcia something pretty fierce]

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1988-06-23.akg414.omalley.30114.sbeok.flac16

I Need A Miracle
Gimme Some Lovin'
All Along The Watchtower
Morning Dew

Encore:
Blackbird
Brokedown Palace
[The 'Blackbird' is notoriously awful, but the rest is pure fire]

http://www.archive.org/details/gd1980-05-11.fob.glassberg.motb-0052.97522.flac16

Space ->
Black Peter ->
Goin' Down The Road Feeling Bad ->
Around And Around ->
Johnny B. Goode

Encore
Brokedown Palace
[Gorgeous MOTB audience here with respectful and attentive audience]

And the best I ever personally saw that looks standard but is played ferociously with tons of invention:
http://www.archive.org/details/gd1990-03-16.aud.unknown.91782.flac16

Space ->
The Other One ->
Stella Blue ->
Sugar Magnolia

Encore
The Last Time %
[The night before is nearly as good, with a Wharf Rat for the ages and a killer 'Revolution' as the encore]
